A Minecraft Movie is getting a sequel and it’s due out on 23rd July 2027.

The news was shared on the official Minecraft social media account with an image of two pickaxes. “Building terrain,” the post teased.

News of a sequel is no surprise, in part due to the reveal in April a follow-up film was already in discussion. The film’s director Jared Hess teased where the film series could go next, pointing to a post-credits scene for clues.

Hess is also due to return to the director’s chair for the sequel, Deadline reported.

But more so, A Minecraft Movie has been a phenomenal hit, even if critics weren’t particularly impressed.

As we reported after its release, A Minecraft Movie had the biggest domestic debut of any video game film adaptation ever in the US

, with an opening weekend of $157m (£121.5m). Worldwide it made $301m (£233m) in that weekend.

Now, Deadline has reported the film has grossed almost $1bn since its release. A sequel, then, was inevitable.

The film became well-known for disruptive screenings thanks to its Chicken Jockey trend of throwing popcorn all over cinemas. While Hess called it “a total blast”, a warning was retrospectively added to the start of the film, along with specific sing-along screenings.

Where else could the film series go? Perhaps to The Far Lands, as one Minecraft player has spent the past 14 years walking to.
