In a conversation with 4Gamer, and translated by Gematsu, Saito hinted that both Nier: Automata and Dragon Quest fans can expect a little treat as both series celebrate their ninth and fortieth anniversaries, respectively, in 2026.

However, he did temper the tease by adding “please don’t get too excited with anticipation!”

“Next year marks the 40th anniversary of Dragon Quest! I’d be extremely happy if everyone could join in on a grand celebration,” Saito said.

“And for Nier: Automata’s ninth anniversary, we’re also preparing ‘just a little something…’ so please don’t get too excited with anticipation! With that, I wish you all a happy New Year.”

Earlier this year, Nier: Automata producer Saito and director Yoko Taro denied any of their character designs were restricted for Western audiences. After the developers were reportedly mistranslated in Japanese-to-English subtitling, Taro said: “I’ve never heard of such a thing happening”.
