The Radeon RX 9070 and the RTX 5070 occupy the same market tier on paper, but they arrive with very different price tags and very different promises. AMD is positioning the RX 9070 as the affordable path to high-refresh 1440p gaming, while Nvidia is asking buyers to pay a premium for DLSS 4 and what it calls a generational architecture leap. Strip away the marketing, and the question is simple: in raw rasterization at 1440p, which card actually wins?

This comparison focuses entirely on rasterized performance – no upscaling, no frame generation, no AI tricks. Both cards are tested at 1440p across a range of demanding titles using driver-optimized settings, with results averaged across multiple runs to account for variance. The RTX 5070 carries an MSRP of $549, while the RX 9070 launches at $549 as well, though street pricing has varied by region and retailer since launch.

Spec Sheet Breakdown

The RX 9070 is built on AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture with 16GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit bus. It packs 56 Compute Units, which translates to 3,584 stream processors, and runs with a boost clock of around 2,520 MHz. The card’s memory bandwidth sits at approximately 576 GB/s, a meaningful step up from RDNA 3. AMD has also made substantial improvements to its ray tracing hardware with RDNA 4, though this article focuses on rasterization.

The RTX 5070 uses Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture, bringing 6,144 CUDA cores and 12GB of GDDR7 memory on a 192-bit bus. GDDR7 delivers higher per-pin bandwidth than GDDR6, which partially compensates for the narrower bus. Boost clocks land around 2,512 MHz. On paper, the RTX 5070 trades memory capacity and bus width for faster memory type and a generation-newer architecture. Whether that trade-off pays off in rasterization is the core question here.

Benchmark Results Across Key Titles

In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p with Ultra settings and ray tracing disabled, the RX 9070 delivers frame rates that sit within 3-5% of the RTX 5070, with the Nvidia card holding a narrow lead in most runs. The difference is rarely perceivable during gameplay, but it is consistent. Both cards push comfortably above 80 fps at these settings, making them legitimate high-refresh options for one of the most demanding open-world titles available.

Alan Wake 2 tells a slightly different story. This is a title that has historically favored Nvidia hardware, and that pattern continues here. The RTX 5070 pulls ahead more noticeably, running roughly 8-10% faster than the RX 9070 when ray tracing is off and Ultra preset is applied. It is not a runaway lead, but it is consistent enough across multiple runs to be meaningful. AMD’s driver team has been actively working on optimization for this title, and future updates may close the gap.

Moving to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and competitive shooters in general, the RX 9070 closes the gap significantly and in some settings actually edges ahead. At 1440p with maximum settings, both cards are well into the triple-digit frame rate territory, which matters less than stability at high refresh rates. The RX 9070 shows slightly better 1% low performance in this title specifically, which would be noticeable in a competitive context where frame consistency matters more than average throughput.

Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, and Forza Horizon 5 all produce results within a 4-6% margin favoring Nvidia, which falls within the range where you would genuinely struggle to identify a winner without a frame counter running. The RTX 5070 wins more benchmarks than it loses, but the margin is rarely large enough to justify a significant price premium on rasterization performance alone.

Where AMD Holds Its Ground

The RX 9070’s 16GB of GDDR6 versus the RTX 5070’s 12GB of GDDR7 becomes relevant in specific scenarios. At 1440p, most current titles do not push past 12GB of VRAM under standard conditions, but texture-heavy mods, future titles, and content creation workloads can change that calculation fast. AMD’s memory advantage is a buffer against future-proofing concerns rather than a present-day benchmark differentiator.

AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling, while not part of this rasterization test, also closes some of the gap between the two cards in real-world gaming conditions. The RX 9070 supports FSR 4 natively, which produces image quality that has been widely praised as a meaningful improvement over FSR 3. Nvidia’s ecosystem advantages – DLSS 4, Reflex, and NVENC – remain real, but AMD’s software stack is no longer the afterthought it was two generations ago.

The Value Calculation

At identical MSRP, the RTX 5070’s rasterization lead at 1440p is real but slim. Across the full benchmark suite, Nvidia wins more tests, but the average performance gap in pure rasterization hovers in the 5-8% range. That is not nothing, but it is also not the kind of gap that changes what games you can play or what settings you need to drop. Both cards handle 1440p at high refresh rates without compromise in every title tested.

Where the comparison shifts is at street price. The RTX 5070 has been selling above MSRP in most markets since launch, with retailers frequently listing it in the $580-620 range. The RX 9070 has generally held closer to its suggested price. If you are actually paying $60-70 more for the Nvidia card to get a 6% average rasterization advantage, the math stops working in Nvidia’s favor fairly quickly. For the buyer who primarily rasterizes – no DLSS, no AI features, just traditional rendering – that premium is hard to justify.

The RTX 5070 is also worth considering if you plan to use DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, which can multiply effective frame rates far beyond what rasterization numbers suggest. But that is a different comparison entirely. For buyers who are skeptical of AI-generated frames or who game on titles without DLSS support, the RX 9070 delivers essentially equivalent 1440p rasterization performance at a price that AMD has managed to keep closer to its stated target. The Radeon RX 9070 XT versus the RTX 5070 Ti tells a similarly close story one tier up, which suggests this pattern holds across AMD’s RDNA 4 lineup against Nvidia’s Blackwell stack.

If rasterization at 1440p is your primary benchmark and you can find both cards at MSRP, the RTX 5070 wins – but only just. The real question is whether that margin is worth tracking down a card that has been harder to find at its intended price.
