Radeon RX 9070 vs RTX 5070: 1440p Rasterization Tested

Two Midrange Titans Fight for the 1440p Sweet Spot

AMD and Nvidia have both arrived at the same price tier with very different philosophies. The Radeon RX 9070, built on RDNA 4 architecture, and the GeForce RTX 5070, running on Blackwell, sit within striking distance of each other on the shelf – yet they approach rendering, memory, and efficiency from completely different directions. At 1440p rasterization, where raw GPU muscle matters more than ray tracing hardware or AI upscaling tricks, the gap between them tells a story that neither company’s marketing would fully volunteer.

The RTX 5070 carries a higher suggested retail price, though real-world street pricing has fluctuated considerably since launch. The RX 9070 came in as the more affordable option and quickly earned attention from builders who wanted strong rasterization performance without paying for features they might never use. Testing both cards across a range of demanding titles at 2560×1440, with all upscaling disabled and quality settings pushed to ultra or equivalent, gives the clearest picture of where each card actually stands.

Raw Performance Numbers Across the Game Library

In Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing off and settings on Ultra, the RX 9070 and RTX 5070 trade blows more closely than expected. The RTX 5070 pulls a small but consistent lead – typically in the range of 5 to 10 percent – in titles built around DirectX 12 with heavy draw call loads. That includes Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2 in rasterization mode, and Hogwarts Legacy. These are games where Nvidia’s driver maturity and shader compilation behavior have historically given it an edge, and that pattern holds here.

Switch to titles that favor AMD’s architecture and the picture shifts noticeably. Starfield, Forspoken, and several older Vulkan titles show the RX 9070 closing or eliminating that gap entirely. In some cases, particularly in Forspoken where AMD’s hardware has long had an advantage, the 9070 wins outright. What makes this noteworthy is that these performance swings are not small rounding errors – they can reach 10 to 15 percent in either direction depending on the engine and API.

Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, and competitive titles running at uncapped or very high frame rates generally favor the RTX 5070 at 1440p, partly because Nvidia’s architecture scales better at extremely high frame rates where CPU overhead becomes a secondary bottleneck. For a player who primarily lives in those titles, the RTX 5070’s edge is real. For someone splitting time between a competitive shooter and a demanding open-world title, the performance delta is far less dramatic across the whole library than the price difference might justify.

One area where the RX 9070 consistently impresses is its 1% low performance. AMD’s RDNA 4 memory subsystem – running 16GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus – handles high-resolution texture loading with notable consistency. The RTX 5070 uses a narrower memory configuration, and in a few heavily texture-loaded scenes in Hogwarts Legacy and The Last of Us Part I, that shows up as slightly rougher 1% lows compared to the 9070’s more even delivery.

Power Consumption and Thermal Behavior

The RX 9070 is the more efficient card by a meaningful margin. Running at full 1440p load, it draws noticeably less power than the RTX 5070 while delivering competitive frame rates – which means the performance-per-watt advantage goes firmly to AMD. For builders working with smaller cases, tighter PSU headroom, or simply a preference for a quieter, cooler system, that efficiency gap matters beyond raw benchmarks.

The RTX 5070 runs warmer under sustained load and requires more from a power supply, though neither card is impractical to cool with a decent aftermarket cooler. Reference and AIB cooling solutions for both have matured since launch, and thermals are manageable on both sides. The efficiency story does not change the frame rate leaderboard, but it adds real context to a value comparison where the two cards are priced close enough that power costs over a multi-year ownership period are worth considering.

FSR 4 vs DLSS 4: A Complication Worth Acknowledging

This comparison is specifically about rasterization performance with upscaling disabled, but ignoring the upscaling landscape entirely would be misleading. The RTX 5070 supports DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, which can produce dramatically higher output frame rates in supported titles. The RX 9070 supports FSR 4, which represents a genuine quality improvement over previous generations and runs on any hardware – but lacks frame generation on this tier without specific game support for Fluid Motion Frames.

For buyers who plan to use DLSS 4 heavily, the RTX 5070’s native rasterization deficit matters less because upscaled output narrows or reverses the gap in perceived performance. For buyers who prefer native rendering or who play titles that lack DLSS support, the native frame rate comparison covered above is what they will actually live with day to day. The choice of how much weight to give upscaling support is personal, but it does complicate any purely rasterization-based verdict.

AMD has been aggressive about bringing FSR 4 support to new releases, and the quality gap between FSR 4 and DLSS 4 in still frames is smaller than it has ever been. The frame generation advantage still sits with Nvidia in terms of breadth of support and reliability, and that is not a gap AMD can close through driver updates alone – it requires game developer adoption of Fluid Motion Frames at the title level.

Which Card Makes More Sense at 1440p Right Now

The RTX 5070 wins more benchmarks than it loses, but it does not dominate. At 1440p rasterization across a diverse library, it holds a lead that real-world pricing must justify. When the two cards land within $50 to $80 of each other – which has happened repeatedly in the weeks since launch – that lead is difficult to defend as a pure value argument. When the RTX 5070 is priced $100 or more above the RX 9070, the math gets worse for Nvidia.

The RX 9070 is the stronger pick for builders on a tighter budget who want 1440p performance that keeps pace with the competition without conceding much. Its memory configuration, its 1% low consistency, and its efficiency all work in its favor. The RTX 5070 is the better card if DLSS 4 is a priority, if you play predominantly in the titles where Nvidia holds its larger performance advantages, or if frame generation support across your game library is something you plan to use regularly.

What complicates a clean recommendation is that the RTX 5070’s strongest argument – Multi Frame Generation in DLSS 4 – only applies inside the specific ecosystem of titles that support it well. Step outside that list, and the RX 9070 is sitting right there, keeping pace on pure rasterization, running cooler, and asking for less money to do it.
