The Samsung 990 Pro and WD Black SN850X have been sitting at the top of the PCIe 4.0 NVMe market for long enough that PC builders now treat them as the default shortlist. Both drives target the same buyer: someone building or upgrading a gaming rig who wants fast load times, reliable sustained performance, and a name-brand drive with a solid warranty. The problem is that the two drives are close enough in price and spec sheet numbers that choosing between them is not obvious until you actually run them through real workloads.
On paper, the Samsung 990 Pro tops out at sequential read speeds of 7,450 MB/s and sequential writes of 6,900 MB/s in its 2TB configuration. The WD Black SN850X matches that with 7,300 MB/s reads and 6,600 MB/s writes. Those differences are small enough that most marketing copy would round them into the same tier. What the spec sheet does not show is how each drive handles the thermal throttling that happens when a drive is under sustained load inside a case with limited airflow, or how random read performance holds up when a game like Cyberpunk 2077 or Baldur’s Gate 3 is streaming assets mid-session.
That gap between spec sheet and real-world use is where this comparison actually matters.

Sequential and Random Performance: Where They Differ
In sequential read and write tests, both drives perform close to their rated speeds when tested in open-air or well-ventilated environments. The Samsung 990 Pro tends to edge ahead slightly in sequential write throughput over sustained periods, largely because Samsung’s in-house controller – the Pascal – is well-matched to its own NAND and manages the SLC cache transition more smoothly. When the drive exhausts its SLC write cache on large file transfers, the 990 Pro holds a steadier degraded speed rather than dropping sharply.
The WD Black SN850X uses a custom WD controller and TLC NAND, and its random read performance is genuinely strong. In 4K random read tests, the SN850X consistently posts competitive IOPS figures that translate well to game asset loading. Open-world games that rely on continuous streaming from storage – think Starfield or Microsoft Flight Simulator – tend to see minimal difference between the two drives in actual loading screens, but the SN850X’s random read advantage becomes more relevant when a game is actively streaming textures and world data while you are already in-game. The subjective result is a slightly smoother feel in asset-heavy scenes, though it is rarely dramatic enough to notice without benchmarking tools running simultaneously.
Random write performance is less relevant for pure gaming use cases, but it matters if the same drive is handling OS tasks, game installations, and video capture simultaneously. The 990 Pro holds a small edge in sustained random write consistency, which is useful if you are capturing footage with OBS while a game is running and loading in the background.

Thermals, Firmware, and Software Ecosystem
Thermal throttling is the most significant practical difference between these two drives in real gaming systems. The Samsung 990 Pro runs warmer under load than its predecessor, the 980 Pro, and Samsung acknowledged this with firmware updates that adjusted thermal management behavior. Drives installed without a heatsink in tightly packed cases – particularly on secondary M.2 slots that receive less airflow – can throttle down to speeds that are noticeably slower than rated performance. Adding a heatsink resolves most of this. The 990 Pro with a heatsink runs cool and stable across sustained workloads.
The WD Black SN850X handles thermals more conservatively by default. It runs cooler in most configurations and throttles less aggressively in cases with average airflow. For builders who are not using heatsinks on their M.2 slots, or who are installing a secondary drive in a position that receives minimal airflow from case fans, the SN850X is the more forgiving option. This is not a minor consideration for compact ATX or ITX builds where thermal headroom is tight.
On the software side, Samsung’s Magician software is more feature-complete than WD’s Dashboard. Magician offers drive health monitoring, over-provisioning controls, performance benchmarking, and firmware update management in a polished interface. WD Dashboard covers the basics but feels less refined. Neither piece of software affects drive performance, but Samsung’s tooling gives more visibility into what the drive is doing over time, which is useful for long-term maintenance.
Which Drive Should You Actually Buy
Both drives carry a five-year warranty and are priced within a few dollars of each other at the 2TB tier, which is the configuration most PC builders actually buy. The Samsung 990 Pro is the better choice if your case has good M.2 airflow, you want the stronger software ecosystem, or you are doing mixed workloads beyond gaming. The WD Black SN850X is the better choice if your build runs warm, if the M.2 slot placement is awkward, or if you simply want a drive that requires less attention to thermal management to perform well. In pure gaming scenarios – loading screens, asset streaming, save file writes – the performance difference between the two is small enough that you will not feel it through a controller or keyboard.

If your existing system is bottlenecked more by GPU than storage – worth checking against recent GPU benchmark data before spending on NVMe upgrades – the difference between these two drives will matter even less than the numbers suggest. What does matter is that both drives have moved past the point where PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage is a weak link in a gaming PC. The real question at this price tier is whether you trust Samsung’s thermal management firmware, or whether you would rather not think about it and pick the drive that handles heat more quietly.
